White and rosé wines must have spent a total ageing period of 48 months between oak barrel and storage in bottle, as a minimum, with a period of at least six months ageing in oak. As for reds, the ageing period required is 24 months in oak barrels, followed and complemented by 36 months’ bottle ageing. So, added together we are talking about a total of 60 months, 5 years. This is what we demand for our Gran Reserva. Going back to simple mathematics we are talking 62 months. This wine is only released in vintages of legendary vine quality, of the required level in our estates to justify allocating them to another wine: the “Selección Especial”. Currently, the wine on sale is the 2001, one of the greatest vintages in the history of the D.O.Ca. Rioja, without doubt of the quality of 1994, 1982, 1970 and 1964. Recently we opened a Montecillo 1987, and we able to check that the lifespan of this wine is more than several decades, without any problem.

At Spain gran Reserva is an additional name for quality wines entitled to the protected designations of origin DO or DOCa or DOP. Gran Reserva wines have a longer ageing period than the wines in question without an additional designation or with the designation Reserva: a total of at least 60 months, of which at least 24 months in wooden barrels. At Argentina a Gran Reserva must be aged in the cellar for at least 24 months as a red wine, and for at least 12 months as a white or rosé wine. In addition, the ratio between the quantity of grapes and wine and the authorised grape varieties are specified. At Chile gran Reserva stands for a wine that has at least 1% alcohol by volume more than the legal minimum and that has been aged in wooden barrels.

Many producers of wines all over the world age their wines before selling them, either in barrels or after bottling, or both. Using Rioja as an example the required length of aging may vary slightly in other Spanish appellations, a red wine labeled as “crianza” has been aged for at least two years, with at least one of those years in oak barrels before release. A “reserva” has been aged at least three years, with at least one of those in barrel. “Gran reserva” means that it was aged at least five years, with a minimum of two years in oak. In addition, gran reserva wines are typically made in only outstanding vintages. White wines also carry these terms, but are aged for shorter periods, with a minimum of six months in oak. So the concept of aging a wine for a year or two or more is not necessarily ambiguous, it’s just not always given a name or classification. But you’re correct that most regions—especially those in the New World—do not try to define these winemaking styles. Winemakers are free to make wines any way they want, tweaking their approach as they wish for each wine, in each vintage.
